A scaled model has been made simultaneously along with the Portal, it is an illustration to showcase the shape of the actual portal as well as to demonstrate to us where the positions of the numbered plywood strips are in the actual structure.

Scaled model in a way is a re-study model of the structure of the Portal as it may capture some minor issues where you could not foresee in the digital model or even in the actual-sized Portal.

Images below showing the progresses of scaled model making and the tools were in need.
